Global Witness Drafts EU Conflict Minerals Law Op-Ed

Patrick Alley, the founding director of Global Witness, an NGO that investigates and campaigns against resource-related conflict and corruption, writes an op-ed for EurActiv.com, titled The EU Must Seize the Opportunity to Keep Conflict Minerals Out of Europe.

In his op-ed, Mr. Alley urges the EU to include compulsory measures in its proposal (which is slated to be released on March 6, 2014) similar to those contained in the U.S. conflict minerals rule. Mr. Alley explains, “A European legislative framework that makes doing due diligence – and publicly reporting on it – mandatory would bring EU companies up to the same responsible sourcing standards of their American competitors. Toothless voluntary guidelines would be a betrayal of the hundreds of thousands of people affected by resource-fuelled wars, and would risk undermining EU aid.”

Hewlett-Packard Enhances Supply Chain Software Solution, Includes Conflict Minerals Declaration Manager

Hewlett-Packard’s (HP) stand alone supply chain software solution, HP Compliance Data Exchange, now includes a conflict minerals component.

According to its press release, the Conflict Minerals Declaration (CMD) Manager will “enable manufacturers to accurately and efficiently report the presence of conflict minerals from the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) and adjoining countries in their supply chains.”

The CMD Manager provides a verified list of conflict-free mines in the DRC and “facilitates the validation, importation and exportation of supplier information.”

The CMD Manager is one of several supply chain software solutions available to manufacturers to assist them in their conflict minerals compliance.
